E.W. TOMPKINS PLUMBING HEATING COOLING – OLDEST PLUMBING COMPANY IN THE CAPITAL REGION

The E.W. Tompkins Company is the oldest plumbing company still operating in the Capital Region.

It was founded by Elbert W. Tompkins Sr. out of his home on 856 Myrtle Ave. in Albany, NY.  The business would begin with Mr. Tompkin’s first business contract, dated September 9, 1920, for alterations and heating repairs at the Third Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in Watervliet, NY.

The total cost of  this first job was $4,745.00, officially launching the E.W. Tompkins Company in 1921.

In 1936, the company became incorporated, and relocated to 22 Market St. in Albany.  In 1949, E.W. Tompkins began a subsidiary company, the Sheridan Supply Corporation,  selling wholesale heating, plumbing, and air conditioning supplies.  At that time it  was difficult for Tompkins to get materials, and Sheridan Supply was set up as Tompkins’ wholesale supplier from which it could buy directly.  

As time went on Sheridan expanded its market to industrial plants and outside contractors.  In order to accommodate its rapidly expanding business, in 1950, E.W. Tompkins purchased 123 Sheridan Ave. in Albany. 

In 1955, E.W. Tompkins went on to purchase 158 ½ Orange St. to house their corporate office, while Sheridan Supply continued to operate at 123 Sheridan Ave.  Then in 1996, E.W. Tompkins purchased 124 & 126 Sheridan Ave., consolidating all of its business operations into one location.
